Jika Kangka Gununamanda Limited (JKG) unites the Lardil, Kaiadilt, and Yankaal peoples for strong cultural governance and self-determination. Join us in driving positive change for our community.
Jika Kangka Gununamanda Limited (JKG) is a community-controlled, not for profit organisation established by our Mornington Island community for our community. Our members are made from our local community-controlled organisations (ACCOs) who represent all family and language groups.
We have formed in response to the need for a strong and unified community controlled voice for Mornington Island, with accountable and representative community decision-making and governance founded in cultural authority.
JKG’s purpose is to build a strong model of cultural governance and self-determination to enhance the voices of our community including in the design and delivery of services to improve our wellbeing and oppoprtunities. We build strength and coordination between our community organisations to respond holistically and with good governance.
JKG is the backbone organisation for Justice Reinvestment (‘JR’) on Mornington Island, called Thaldii Karrwa (‘Stand up strong’), bringing together community, services and stakeholders to build a new way of working that shifts power and decision making to our community to self-determine responses to the drivers of contact with the justice system and other harmful systems.
As the backbone organisation for justice reinvestment, JKG will keep the work aligned to the overall guiding vision of our community, and coordinate and manage the operations and implementation of the Thaldii Karrwa justice reinvestment initiative. JKG will support the involvement of all of our community, coordinate engagement, stakeholder relationships, two-way communication, build community data, resources, support monitoring & reporting and collective advocacy.
JKG does not set the vision for our community or independently decide on responses or solutions. JKG brings together the voices of community to build the vision and direction for JR. JKG will seek to build new ways of working with mainstream organisations which are accountable to our community and meet the needs of our people.
Establishing governance structures, processes and procedures to guide the direction and approach of JKG. We will formalise broader project governance and partnership arrangements founded in local culture, knowledge and ways of working.
With our community, develop a JR strategy and action plan, including to improve current systems and services and respond to the needs of our people. We will implement circuit breaker programs focused on the cultural, social and emotional wellbeing of our community to prevent contact with the justice system.
JKG is founded on collective strength and partnerships. We welcome others to walk with our community in building a self-determined future on Mornington Island.
